With a young daughter I am up at around 6-6.30 with her – in fairness most morning she will settle again for another snooze but up then properly at 7.30. I am then at my desk for 9am. While at Blogtalk 2010 we were lucky enough to hear Dan Gilmor speak. Mr. Gilmor is director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. While the conference was primarily digitally focused, Mr. Gilmor’s presentation had definite relevance to the more traditional elements of the PR industry. He spoke of the need for a ‘new media literacy’ among people in society due the entire globe moving online and becoming more social. Why is that kicking pr companies seems to be back in vogue these days? It has always been a treasured past time of a small number of journalists and generally raises its head around this time of year when journalists write to teach “stupid” pr firms the rules of engagement. This year it seems to have escalated, and has moved to a new level online where popular bloggers and Twitter users have taken glee in slagging off pr companies.
