Tabloid Tales

The Irish Daily Mirror this week published a story detailing how being fit may in fact be all down to genes. They cite research conducted by a university in Canada that shows individuals who find it easy to stay fit may just have been born with the right genes, and those who previously have been termed as ‘lazy’ may just be missing the gene, hence finding it naturally tougher to exercise. It brings new meaning to Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’. Paul McGrath will always be known as an Irish soccer hero however on Thursday The Star outlined how the

Sports Pic of the Day

Today’s Irish Daily Mirror shows Kilkenny half forward Henry Shefflin walking down the tunnel with Liam McCarthy back in his grasp after a year of hurting. Its was sweet revenge for the Cats as they overcame Tipperary on a score line of 2-17 to 1-16 in Croke Park, making up for last years All Ireland final defeat when the Premier ended the ‘Drive for Five’.

Tabloid Tales

Chaos raged through the streets of London during the week as police fought to bring mindless yobs under control. In a story that dominated the media landscape on both sides of the Irish Sea, London was transformed into a warzone as terror reigned down on the English capital. Violence also spread to other cities including Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol. Reports surfaced throughout the ordeal of mindless acts that included a teenager being forced to strip down on the street and hand over all his clothes, while another story of a young Asian student hit the headlines after he was helped

Pic of the Day – Otterly Adorable

Pictured in today’s Irish Daily Mirror is the cutest and cuddliest pair of friends I have seen in a long time.  This orphaned otter cub has become a cosy companion to a litter of abandoned kittens at the Secret World rescue centre in Somerset.  A member of staff at the rescue centre said ‘They are so close there is barely a whisker between them’.  Secret World is a charity that specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation and eventual release of orphaned, injured and sick wildlife in Britain.   We all have to agree that they sure are a cute pair. Paula.

Pic of the Day- Summer Fun in Dublin Zoo

Pictured in today’s Irish Daily Mirror are some of the animals from Dublin Zoo enjoying the summer sun.   As we enjoyed a rise in the temperature, elephants Bernhardine and Yasmin cooled down while splashing around in their daily shower. Gerry Creighton from Dublin Zoo said; ‘The elephant shower is a very important part of their daily skincare regime which they take very seriously. The elephants start with an ice cold shower then exfoliate by placing the rocks from the habitat on their skin. We also know that elephants prefer drinking from flowing water so they never miss a chance to

Pic of the Day – Icy Dip

As unpredictable as the Irish weather may be, when it hits the cold peaks we tend to be generally gloomier than we would be during the summer months.  Pictured in today’s Irish Daily Mirror are some perky little penguins proving to us that a little bit of ice isn’t going to stop them.  One penguin leads the way by plunging into the icy water head first, as his friends watch on in admiration. The bird decided to take the initiative as a tourist boat sailed by.  Amateur photographer, Gareth Jenkins from Wales was on hand to catch the Antarctic action.

Pic of the Day – From 27 Dresses to 170 Costumes

Pictured in today’s Irish Daily Mirror is what you might call every teenagers nightmare! Parents are generally nothing but embarrassing when you are going through your adolescent years but for Rain Price from American Fork, Utah this was taken to an ultimate extreme.    On the first day of the school year he was waved off by his father Dale, wearing an American Football helmet.  The next day Elvis smiled from the doorstep and for 170 days Dale dressed up in different outfits as a mortified Rain boarded his bus.    Dale said “It’s a fathers way of saying I

Pic of the Day – Monkey Business

If you are anything like me, when you hear the word spider you think small and creepy rather than small and cute.  Pictured in today’s Irish Daily Mirror is a spider of a different kind.    Estela is a seven week old Spider Monkey who was abandoned by her mother shortly after being born on January 17th.  Keepers at Australia’s Melbourne Zoo have taken on the roll as ‘mammy’ and take it in turn to feed and monitor Estela’s condition.    Jess McKelson, a keeper at the zoo said ‘Keeping Estela alive has been a big challenge and she has

Pic of the Day – Eyes bigger than your belly?

This picture named ‘Frogleg Moustache’ taken in sunny California by photographer Michael Cenci appeared in the Irish Daily Mirror.     I’m sure at some stage you have all got half way through a meal to realise you just can’t eat anymore.  This seems to be the case for our feathered friend who is left with a pair of frog’s legs dangling out of its mouth.  I wonder could he get it takeaway.
