iPhone App of the Week – FilmOn Live TV

I came across this app last week thanks to a friend who has recently moved house and was desperate for her reality TV fix. FilmOn allows you to stream live TV straight to your iPhone or iPad and it apparently works with Apple TV too. The TV channel list is pretty impressive with a large number of UK stations including, ITV (1-4), BBC (1-2), Channel 5 and an exclusive list of FilmOn’s own film and sports channels. It’s a little bit buggy at times and can be slow to load but this app has generally worked pretty well for me.

iPhone App of the Week – Royal Wedding by Hello!

Yes, you read it correctly Hello, the shameless celebrity magazine has brought out an iPhone app celebrating all things plaid and diamond encrusted. This royal app is dedicated to the highly anticipated wedding of Prince William and queen to be Kate Middleton in London this year. The app is another step towards the frenzied excitement that will peak on April 29th when the royal family descend upon Westminster Abbey. If your office consists primarily of women, just like Pembroke Towers, then this will no doubt be searched out with giddy enthusiasm. Souvenirs for royal weddings are highly sought-after so in

iPhone App of the Week – Irish Speed Traps

A few weeks ago the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority launched their 700 mobile and static cameras across Ireland in the hope of urging people to slow down on our roads. Irish speed Traps was launched by an independent developer to help people become more aware of these cameras. All of the locations are preloaded in the app but of course cannot forewarn you of where the Garda mobile units are located. When driving with the app launched it will give you both an audio and visual announcement when approaching a speed camera. You can set the app to

iPhone App of the Week – DART Times

Since my new move I started getting the DART to work despite Markus’ evaluation of the service. I have been searching for an app that was dedicated to the train line but struggled to find anything of value. After becoming bored with my (free) timetable app which is rendered fairly useless once the DART delays begin to pile up on each other I finally forked out the €2.39 for DART times by Bluebear and was very happy with the results. This app does not contain any timetables as the focus is on real-time. It allows you to input your destination

iPhone App of the Week – Take That

Last month’s frenzied purchasing of tickets for Take That’s Progress tour saw fans scramble for a chance to see the boy band reunited at last. While the excitement of the tour is still lingering around the Pembroke office, we have found yet another way for fans to stay close to the infamous five. Take That launched their iPhone app yesterday to coincide with the release of their new album and it has now managed to clamber its way up the iTunes charts. With links to Take That news and tweets, fans can have access to the band and their activities

iPhone App of the Week – Crash Bandicoot Nitro Cart 2

I think we all would claim to have been experts at Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation at one time or another but the opportunity to play on the iPhone has arrived and brings with it a new challenge. The game is quite like the original with similar graphics but needlessly adapted controls. The app itself is quite big and requires Wifi to download so you need to make sure you have enough space on your device before you click install.  Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2 has nine different characters to race across 12 tracks. The game is controlled via the iPhone’s

iPhone App of the Weekend – TV3 App

I have been waiting for a TV catch up app for the Irish market for a while now and it is great to see TV3 stepping up to the plate with this app. Unlike RTE who have a number of apps in the Irish iTunes store, TV3 has waited until now to release its all inclusive app. Their app has a standard news offering with video content. Unfortunately, it pales in comparison in its quality when put up against other real time news apps such as RTE and BBC. News stories are updated intermittently and associated video content is sparse.

iPhone App of the Week – Daft.ie

Rents prices are falling through the roof, or so we are told. If you are like me and currently looking for a house or apartment to rent you’ll need this app. It allows you to easily browse the Daft website on your iPhone while on the go. From my house-hunting experience it seems the website changes everyday, the good ones that go up are gone twenty minutes later. At least with this real-time app you may have some chance of getting that dream rental property or indeed any type of property you desire. The app offers all of the useful

iPhone App of the Week – Bord Gais ‘Think Beyond’

This week’s app of the week is a great utility app from Bord Gais called ‘Think Beyond’. There are so many utility apps in the iTunes store that it really can be a bit labour intensive to browse through the category attempting to figure out which ones are worthwhile. In recent months we have seen a surge in Irish based developers and Irish companies creating their own personalised apps. The ones that really stand out are the apps that add value, which this one certainly does. Think Beyond is an application for current Bord Gais customers to aid them in

iPhone App of the Week – Clixtr

We all know that location based applications are big news at the moment. Foursquare have almost three million users and Facebook places has just launched over in the U.S. iPhone apps have been using GPS location technology for a while now so location based apps are not as exciting as they once were. However while at Blogtalk 2010 the primary developer of Clixtr, Irishman Fergus Hurley, briefly walked us through his app. Clixtr is a location-based photo sharing platform. The app allows users to take photos and upload them to events in real-time. Other users can view event streams and
