iPhone App of the Week – Google Goggles

No you didn’t read it wrong, Google has released their own Goggles! This is essentially an update of Google’s current iPhone app that already includes a voice activation feature. Unfortunately the app refuses to acknowledge my thick Wicklow accent so I had resigned myself to typing the search term as I presume (or hope) many others were forced to do. Now Google has released a new feature with for their Google app that is not reliant on how fast you speak or how you say potato. Google Goggles allows you to take a picture of text, book titles, artwork, landmarks

iPhone App of the Weekend – TV3 App

I have been waiting for a TV catch up app for the Irish market for a while now and it is great to see TV3 stepping up to the plate with this app. Unlike RTE who have a number of apps in the Irish iTunes store, TV3 has waited until now to release its all inclusive app. Their app has a standard news offering with video content. Unfortunately, it pales in comparison in its quality when put up against other real time news apps such as RTE and BBC. News stories are updated intermittently and associated video content is sparse.

iPhone App of the Week – Daft.ie

Rents prices are falling through the roof, or so we are told. If you are like me and currently looking for a house or apartment to rent you’ll need this app. It allows you to easily browse the Daft website on your iPhone while on the go. From my house-hunting experience it seems the website changes everyday, the good ones that go up are gone twenty minutes later. At least with this real-time app you may have some chance of getting that dream rental property or indeed any type of property you desire. The app offers all of the useful

iPhone App of the Week – Bord Gais ‘Think Beyond’

This week’s app of the week is a great utility app from Bord Gais called ‘Think Beyond’. There are so many utility apps in the iTunes store that it really can be a bit labour intensive to browse through the category attempting to figure out which ones are worthwhile. In recent months we have seen a surge in Irish based developers and Irish companies creating their own personalised apps. The ones that really stand out are the apps that add value, which this one certainly does. Think Beyond is an application for current Bord Gais customers to aid them in

iPhone App of the Week – Sonic the Hedgehog

I didn’t even know how much I wanted this until I seen it in the iTunes App Store over the weekend. Sonic the Hedgehog has come to the iPhone & iPad in all of his basic original graphics glory. While I was hesitant to pay the €2.39 price tag I simply could not resist. Sonic did not disappoint. The controls mimic the old-school Sega Mega Drive consol with the simple direction control and single ‘A’ button to make him jump. The graphics, music and Sega theme tune are all still intact. Remarkably all of the levels including the characters are

Iphone App of the Week – Topshop

I literally fell out of my chair with excitement when I saw this app for Topshop. Topshop, or fashion Nirvana as it is also known, has finally created a way for us to be connected to their store 24 hours a day. The app is jam-packed full of the latest fashion pieces, blog entries, essential trends for the season and behind the shoot videos. It allows you to save, send and share your favourite looks and then shop for them at Topshop.com. Shopping has yet to really take off from the iPhone platform. The screen is a bit too small,

iPhone App of the Week…..Ask the Octopus

The World Cup is over and the octopus oracle Paul has retired! So who will we turn to solve our sporting dilemmas now? Thankfully Utouchlabs has found a way to pull Paul out of the depths of retirement and back into our lives in the form of an iPhone app! Yes it is true, now everyone can have the psychic powers of Paul the octopus on their iPhone. This app allows you to pose two options to Paul and he will choose (through the unique methodology octopuses use) the best alternative from those options. While limited in the fact that

iphone App of the Week – Today FM

Listen to Today FM Yesterday! Hello everyone, welcome to Pembroke’s new iphone/ipod application review section of our blog. With the huge rise in the use of smartphones and the growth of the Irish app store to over 200,000 apps it can be hard to spot the apps that can really add value and not just use up megabytes on your phone. Each week we will highlight our favourite app of the week and why we think it is worth the download. First up this week is the brand new Today FM app. A definite must- have for fans of the
