Today’s Sports Picture of the Day is courtesy of the Irish Times who outline the wages being afforded to the top brass in the FAI. On the back of yesterday’s news that Giovanni Trapattoni and his team have signed a two year extension to their contracts, Malachy Clerkin demonstrates how the Italian compares to fellow international managers.
It is astounding to think that ‘Trap’ is paid €1.5 million, only three hundred thousand less than Vicente Del Bosque who guided the Spanish to World Cup glory in 2010, while his assistant Marco Tardelli is reputed to be in the same wage category (€500,000- €600,000) as current Scotland manager Craig Levein.
These figures are minute compared to current English manager Fabio Capello who earns a staggering €7 million from the English FA. For a team who are notorious under achievers on the big stage, questions have to be asked as to why the former Real Madrid and Roma boss is receiving such a figure – money that could surely be reinvested more effectively across grass roots level.
Qualification for a major tournament for the first time in 10 years comes at a high cost it seems… Is it worth it??
