Radio and Newspapers – an unlikely marriage?

The following article first appeared on Starcom’s blog. After much speculation, the popular sports show ‘Off the Ball’ will soon be returning to the airwaves. However, the famous five will make their return in a somewhat different broadcasting format than expected; they will form a partnership with The Irish Times. The partnership highlights the fact that newspapers are no longer as we know them. Although many reports predict the demise of newspapers, this is not the case. Newspapers are simply changing from the former print version into various different formats and offering consumers valuable content in new innovative ways. This

Workplace Fashion: Pembroke Ladies Grace Irish Tatler

The Pembroke ladies are showing off their work wardrobes in May’s issue of Irish Tatler which is out today. Knowing what to wear in the office can be a challenge – whether you’re starting out as a young professional or stuck in a style rut. That’s why I love the ‘9 to 5’ in Irish Tatler as not only does it give us instant style inspiration but it also provides a snapshot into the working wardrobes of Irish women.   CAPSULE WARDROBE At the risk of sounding like Gok Wan, I think a capsule wardrobe is essential to dressing successfully

Crisis As Usual

The following article appeared in the latest issue of Accountancy Ireland. The entire issue is available to read here.   Accountants are well versed in dealing with thorny business issues.  From liquidations to turnarounds, budget cuts to balance sheet restructuring, accountants can sometimes get ‘bad press’ for simply doing their job in a difficult situation.  With an estimated 1,700 companies going out of business in 2012, there were plenty of difficult situations to manage and each one had its own unique communications challenge. But 2012 itself was not unique in crisis management.  Take the past few years – BP Deepwater

ABC’s and the death of newspapers…

Like the pages in a book the world keeps turning but newspaper pages will one day cease to turn if the latest ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures on newspaper circulation in Ireland are anything to go by. The ABC’s show that the Irish Examiner has 39,555 copies, the Irish Times 88,356 and the Irish Independent 123,981. So the obvious conclusion is that newspapers will one day stop. Or is it? There is increasing evidence that trust in online information continues to plummet. Only 40% of people trust the information they get online – the figure in 2000 was 55%

Finding the Silver Lining in a Crisis

A wise woman once said, “In the midst of a crisis, when everyone about you is losing their cool yet you remain calm, then maybe, just maybe, you have no idea how bad it really is.”  Wise words and particularly relevant given the many crises we seen already in 2013. For a year that started well enough things went downhill rapidly. From HMV’s administration and closure in Ireland, to contaminated food ingredients, B&Q and Lance Armstrong’s performance on Oprah, 2013 has already thrown up more than its fair share of bad news. It shouldn’t be a major shock though –

Ó Buachalla – what’s that in English?

It was early yesterday morning and the text read loud and clear. “Irish Times tar éis ainmneacha Choláiste Eoin a aistriú go béarla…” The text was from my brother and like me he is a former pupil of Coláiste Eoin in Stillorgan, the Irish language secondary school. The text went on some more but the gist of it being that a colleague of his, and parent of one of the current pupils in Coláiste Eoin, had spotted that the write up in The Irish Times sports supplement which should have referred to her son, his team mates and his school

Rory McIlroy: The Wealthiest Irish Athlete in History

Rory McIlroy is laughing all the way to the bank as Nike PUTT out a €200 million 10-year sponsorship deal. This outrageous sum of money makes Rory McIlroy the wealthiest athlete in Ireland. So why did Nike pick Rory? Well, I believe he is the definition of a hole-in- one candidate to be an ambassador for any organisation. Rory has the full package. He has a rake of awards to his name including the prestigious European Golfer of the Year, currently holds World Number #1 spot in world rankings and to top it all off has a bombshell of a

Biggest Irish Sports Stars on Twitter: 2013 (Part One)

In April of last year I complied a list of the biggest Irish Sports stars in terms of Twitter followers so being the impatient person I am I couldn’t wait the full 12 months and wanted to see if there had been any big changes as a result of the sporting events in 2012. As with last year I am going to list the various athletes according to their sports including rugby, hurling, gaelic football, soccer as well as those with a sizable following from other sports. Rugby It’s pretty much a case of as you were. No surprise as BOD retains top

Do Inter-County Teams Need a Performance Psychologist? Part One

On a cold, wet and miserable Monday morning a debate began over morning coffee as to whether inter-county teams need a Performance Psychologist? This two part blog will explore the responses of those present, and indeed will highlight the divide in opinions, which I believe mirror those of people the length and breath of the country!   Michael O’Keefe; MD Pembroke Communications and former Dublin inter-county footballer  Do Inter County teams need a sports performance psychologist? Is it all a case of the emperor’s new clothes? I am not sure but it surely cannot be one size fits all. The latest craze

Win a Prize? Liked and Shared!

One of the great contradictions of Facebook are competitions or more specifically the like and share function as a mechanic to entry. Those of us working in the social media industry are fully aware, or should be, of Facebook guidelines with regard to how competitions are run. However it is certainly one of the ongoing issues for brand pages. The Guidelines For those of you who aren’t aware of Facebook guidelines or need a quick reminder they are as follows: i. Promotions on Facebook must be administered within Apps on Facebook.com, either on a Canvas Page or a Page App. ii.
