Radio and Newspapers – an unlikely marriage?

The following article first appeared on Starcom’s blog. After much speculation, the popular sports show ‘Off the Ball’ will soon be returning to the airwaves. However, the famous five will make their return in a somewhat different broadcasting format than expected; they will form a partnership with The Irish Times. The partnership highlights the fact that newspapers are no longer as we know them. Although many reports predict the demise of newspapers, this is not the case. Newspapers are simply changing from the former print version into various different formats and offering consumers valuable content in new innovative ways. This

RTÉ Player pauses for tea break

Isn’t it strange that advertisements can almost tell what you’re thinking? Every evening, I like to catch up with the daily soaps, my favourite being Eastenders. RTÉ player is the most convenient place for me to keep up to date with the comings and goings of the East End, so it has become my first port of call for catch-up television. Yesterday evening, sitting on my bed, I pressed play and the theme tune started to roll. At about thirty seconds in I felt a craving like no other for a hot cup of tea and a few custard creams,

Ó Buachalla – what’s that in English?

It was early yesterday morning and the text read loud and clear. “Irish Times tar éis ainmneacha Choláiste Eoin a aistriú go béarla…” The text was from my brother and like me he is a former pupil of Coláiste Eoin in Stillorgan, the Irish language secondary school. The text went on some more but the gist of it being that a colleague of his, and parent of one of the current pupils in Coláiste Eoin, had spotted that the write up in The Irish Times sports supplement which should have referred to her son, his team mates and his school

RTE Dominance Remarkable Despite Tough Competition

Talk to Joe in 2013 The latest JNLR figures are, as always, fascinating reading. They also have a little bit for everyone in the audience this time around with good news for most of the main players depending on which way you look at it. Without going into too much detail, some highlights include Liveline up 33,000, Dempsey has proved he has bouncebackability and is up 36,000 while Newstalk’s breakfast is up 18,000. 2FM has stabilised after a tricky few years and the remarkable popularity of regional radio continues to astound with Highland’s 65% market share and Tipp FM’s 55%

I love LOVE HATE

Last year I randomly came upon RTE’s Love Hate at the beginning of the season and became enthralled with the series. Instead of living with a dreaded fear of Sunday evenings I would really look forward to them and capping off the weekend with Nidge and co. So…. I waited very impatiently for season three to begin this year and now, two episodes in, there are elements of the series that I still love but there are now elements I unfortunately hate. Episode one produced some of the most horrific scenes I have seen on TV (its fair to say

The Journey!

It’s perhaps a little too early for Christmas ads but when I came across this one it would have been rude not to share! The new John Lewis Christmas TV ad celebrates the extra mile we all go to at Christmas to find the perfect gift. Ok, yes you’re watching a snowman’s journey but while you travel with him and listen to the stunning music you’re sure to be touched by it. The ad is called ‘The Journey’, it opens in a family’s snow-covered garden, with children making a snowman and snowwoman. When the snowman has mysteriously disappeared the next

Byrne’s Comments May Sharpen Focus of Tourism Drive

Gabriel Byrne’s comments on the government backed Gathering, a joint initiative of Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland, has caused a national debate and media storm. There are those who see it as a nail in the coffin before the year has started and an unwelcome PR disaster but I for one think the comments are a positive development. Let me start by saying that our company represents several tourism related clients, so we have no interest in anything but positive news when it comes to the hospitality and travel trade. However, it must be added that there is confusion as to what

Irish Times Opts for a Slimmer, Prettier Model

Monday morning arrived with the promise of a slimmer, prettier Irish Times landing on doormats across the country, in what editor Kevin O’Sullivan cites as ‘one of the most significant developments in the paper’s history’. And indeed the clever design bods at Palmer-Watson have created a thing of understated beauty. The brief can only have been ‘improve it, but don’t do anything drastic’. You’d be forgiven for not noticing the change in size (a mere 32mm shaved off the sides), but it should garner you a few less glares on the Dart commute; or the new extra bold Expresso font,

The Crisis Management Blog: People will forgive and most will forget……if you communicate properly….

“By the time you hear the thunder, it’s too late to build the ark.” — Crisis Management is all about preparation…most of the time….   The current well publicised Ulster Bank crisis is something no PR consultant would wish on their worst enemy and this piece is far from a bashing exercise.   This blog is merely intended to highlight and explain the theory of issues management and to ponder if this crisis may be the first of many complicated “technological” crises that may dog companies in years to come.   This Ulster Bank crisis is one that has seen

5 Kinds of PR Agency-Client Relationships

The 5 Kinds of PR-Agency Relationships…which one do you recognise? The client-agency relationship can be many things to many people and every business relationship has its own dynamic. However, in PR land, the relationships can often be classified under five broad categories.   Which one(s) do you recognise?   1. The Master-Servant: The Master-Servant is quite prevalent. It goes along the lines that the agency is selling, the client is buying and never the lines be blurred. The client demands a top class service and usually gets it, and if not, they move on. There is little room for manoeuvre
