Pic of the Day: Oh Sandy

By the time most of us were in bed last night, those who live across the Eastern seaboard of the United States, and especially in New York, were bracing themselves for what is believed to be the biggest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic to hit the US. President Barack Obama has declared a “major disaster” in New York state after storm ‘Sandy’  caused flooding and cut power to millions and at least 15 people are reported dead across several US states. Today’s pic of the day is taken from the front page of the Irish Times and we are sure

Pic of the Day: Another Giant Leap

Felix Baumgartner achieved  a truly remarkable feat when he skydived from the edge of space in a record breaking stunt  becoming the first man to break the sound barrier without mechanical help.  According to his spokesman he reached a speed of 706mph jumping from height of 128,000 feet above the earth – almost four times the height of a cruising passenger airline! Records were also smashed here on the ground as Red Bull Stratos, the event behind Baumgartner’s skydive, reached eight million concurrent views on YouTube, marking the highest-ever concurrent viewing figure on the  site. Infographic of the Day: Emigration in Numbers

Today’s infographic is also our pic of the day which appeared in the business section of today’s Irish Independent. Much has been made of the mass exodus of young people from this country and this graphic really hits home just how serious the problem is. Worryingly the rate of emigration shows no sign of slowing down. This comes as no surprise given Ireland, or indeed Europe, looks likely to be making an economic recovery anytime soon. The fact that so many are heading for English speaking countries, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, is also a damming indictment on our education system. So few are

Pic of the Day: In Memoriam

Today’s Irish Times carried a photo of a single red rose in front of the honour guard of firefighters from around Wicklow who were in Bray to mark the fifth anniversary of the deaths of firefighters Brian Murray and Mark O’ Shaughnessy. The two firefighthers lost their lives fighting a blaze in a disused factory  in the town. It is a reminder of the risks our emergency services take on a daily basis and is something we should never take for granted.
