When life imitates art…..

Published on April 3, 2013 by in Entertainment

Not sure if you’d call Far and Away art but anyway. I would like to applaud the genius who made the connection between Tom Cruise and Eyerland. His great (x100) grandfather ‘restored evicted tenants to lands just before the famine’ – I had to read this at least three times to understand it. It’s brilliant. Not only is he related but according to Tourism Ireland: Cruise’s ancestry includes knights, rebels and the “hero landlord”. He’s a HERO! Tom is happy, the Irish people are happy, the movie makers are happy. This is the best news anyone has heard all year!

Páidí Ó Sé’s Legacy Lives On

A total of forty-eight teams from seven countries competed in this year’s Páidí Ó Sé tournament, the biggest ever. I was proud to be part of one of the competing ladies Gaelic football senior teams. I play for Foxrock-Cabinteely and it was our second year attending Páidí’s renowned tournament. Páidí Ó Sé is a Kerry legend and this tournament represents him and all he stood for very well. It’s a mixture of some of the best parts of the Irish culture; football and craic. There is no dress code in the evening time, anything and everything is appropriate. It ranged

Beyonce’s Pepsi halftime performance.

Forget the Ravens and the 49ers, it was Beyonce’s halftime performance that really stole the show at the 2013 Super bowl on Sunday. Beyonce, who has sold over 75 million solo records worldwide, put on a spectacular performance that wowed over 110 million viewers. Her performance was so powerful that it was even rumoured to be the cause of the 35 minute blackout that occurred shortly after her performance. Although this wasn’t really the cause, it wouldn’t have been surprising given the array of visual effects used – holograms, fire, ice and smoke! The show began with Beyonce rising up

LA’s Loss is Paris’ Gain

So big hearted David Beckham is to give his Paris Saint- Germain salary to a Parisian based children’s charity.  Can the man do no wrong?  His talented wife and children are to remain in London while he continues his footy à Paris. They are quite the globe trotters the Beckham clan, and why not? Their children are young, they have a few bob and they probably don’t have to consider luggage allowances as they fly around the world. But now, as the boys Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz and their little girl, the gorgeous baby Harper Seven get older, their parents

Super Bowl Ads – The Price of 30 Seconds of Fame

In a more unorthodox preview to this weekend’s Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, I have taken a look at the hype associated with the much anticipated advertisements that can for many bring as much excitement as the game itself. Long known as the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’, Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 drew an incredible global audience of 111 million viewers, and there is an even larger audience expected for this year’s game. While this almost incomprehensible viewership figure may seem like the perfect platform for advertisers and marketing executives to sell their

One to watch: Little Green Cars

An Irish band to watch out for in 2013 is Little Green Cars. The band is made up of five immensely talented people, Stevie Appleby (vocals and guitar), Adam O’Regan (vocals and lead guitar) Donagh Seaver O’Leary (bass guitar), Dylan Lynch (drums) and Faye O’Rourke (vocals and guitar) Their sound ranges from early REM to Woody Guthrie and they have been described as an Irish country-rock band. Interesting I know, but it works! They are doing so well they have been signed by both Island Records in the UK and the US based independent label Glassnote Records, who have also

Biggest Irish Celebrities on Twitter

Last year I wrote a blog post about the biggest Irish sports stars on Twitter so I felt it was about time a list of the biggest Irish celebrities on Twitter was compiled.  From (ex)boyband members to stand up comedians it is quite a mix. Some have their large amount of followers thanks to the quality and humour of their tweets, others, well…. So here they are, with Mullingar’s second favourite singer, leading the way with a hugely impressive number of followers. Will Mr Horan be the most popular Irishman on Twitter for ever….scary thought! Niall Horan 9,106,650 9,106,650 female teenage

2013 Golden Globes- Best and Worst Dressed

It is always around this time of year that people with any interest in fashion become the biggest critics. This year, like every other, there has been an array of both breathtaking and abominable gowns displayed by the biggest names in Hollywood and I, along with many others, have been waiting anxiously to let our views be known! Fashion flops #1 The award for worst dressed goes without hesitation to Sarah Michelle Gellar.  Her Monique Lhuillier gown, that I can only describe as a tie die cloud, was supposedly chosen by her daughter. As sweet and all as it is

Video of the Day: Cheesy or Fantastic?

Many of us have seen the video of McFly’s Tom Fletcher making his wedding speech. In fact over 5 million of us have seen it so far. His speech hasn’t been a huge viral hit because it was your average speech or even because it was given by a B list celebrity. It became so popular because it was original. I can only imagine that the majority of those viewers on YouTube are woman either A)fantasising that their future husband will come up with something similar or B) momentarily hating their husband for not coming up with something equally as

After much anticipation the nominations for the 85th Annual Academy Awards were announced today by Emma Stone and Seth McFarlane. There weren’t many surprises in the line up with “Lincoln” receiving 12 nominations, making it the movie with the highest number of Academy Award nominations this year, including best director for Stephen Spielberg and best picture. Following in close second is Life of Pi with 11 nominations. “Les Miserables” and “Silver Linings Playbook” are joint third with eight nominations, battling it out in numerous categories like best supporting actress and best actor.
