The Magdalene Laundries’ Apology

They were the forgotten women of Ireland but their stories have been well-documented throughout history. To say that the findings of the McAleese report came as a surprise to the State simply rings untrue, and it is this hesitation and reluctance to take responsibility that has incensed the nation. The handling of the Magdalene Laundries’ report not only highlighted how out of touch the State can be, but also missed out a valuable opportunity to make some amends to those women. The present Government had taken the brave step commissioning the report initially but was then perceived to have fallen

Good News

Everybody needs a pick me up every now and again. That’s why once in a while it’s good to peruse the day’s headlines for something cheerful and upbeat. I’ve taken some of my favourite stories from today’s media, so that I can share them with you. Firstly, there where several unlikely heroes in Washington as three brothers canoeing were caught off guard by the rough, freezing water of Washington Creek . A group of prison inmates were working nearby when they heard screams for help. At first the prisoners thought that it was a group of children playing until they saw the

What we Googled in 2012

Every year Google’s Zeitgeist of the world’s most searched topics reveals what the we were interested in and wanted to know more about. So what about the Irish? The top trending searches are pretty much the topics and news stories you would expect with a combination of sports (Euro 2012, Olympics and Katie Taylor) and news stories (Household charge, Jill Meagher and Kate Midleton). It is the the other searches that reveal a little more. Clearly the Irish are an amorous bunch, or at least want to learn how to be. Love is top of the ‘What is..?’ searches while in the

Our Inspirational Talk by Billy Walsh

The team here at Pembroke Communications had a super experience last Friday when we were lucky enough to get a talk from boxing hero Billy Walsh as part of an away day.  From Billy Walsh’s opening statement, “looking inward in the context of what we faced outward,” our team knew we were in for a Christmas treat.  The Pembroke team had goose bumps after the talk from the inspiring boxing trainer.  He passionately spoke about the uphill battle faced by the Irish boxing team over the years and how he and his team have helped to build a high performance

The Pope needs PR help….

At the outset let me state that I have no religious axe to grind or position to push.  But clearly Pope Benedict XVI needs some help. For an organisation whose primary purpose is to spread the good word, Pope Benedict’s recent ‘Rite & Reason’ article in the Irish Times must surely be a best practice example of how not to do it. Starting your communication to lay people with the line “Significant exponents of modern exegesis take the view that when Matthew and Luke say, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, they are making a theological statement, not a historical one.”

The GAA’s First Test?

This week, the GAA was crowned as the greatest force of social change in Ireland according to research revealed by the Social Entrepreneur Irish survey ahead of Saint Vincent De Paul and Mary McAleese. The GAA has implanted itself in every county in Ireland, in some cases the local GAA club is the heart and soul of the town. The GAA has a huge presence and influence in Ireland and that is why the organisation is seen by the public as being responsible for social change. The GAA’s reputation as the greatest force of social change in Ireland encountered their

Anders Behring Breivik: New CCTV Footage of Oslo Van Bomb

Chilling video footage of right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik’s parking his van at the foot of a building tower that housed the prime minister’s office in Oslo on 22nd July 2011 was released by Norway’s public prosecutor for the first time yesterday. The footage shows Breivik walking briskly away from the van containing his homemade bomb, which weighed nearly a tonne, dressed as a security guard. Minutes later, his fertiliser bomb explodes leaving eight people dead. The video is part of a documentary that broadcaster NKR aired on Tuesday evening and shows the extend of the damage caused by the

PR Job Needed to Give New York Back its Shine Post Sandy

Barack Obama will need to start a very proactive comms outreach and show he means business after his re-election which followed a bitterly divisive and very expensive campaign. With New York recovering for Hurricane Sandy, the Big Apple must also clean up its mess, and it is not just the street debris and attack on its complex infrastructure I am talking about. New York must also convince the world that it is open for business and spend thrift tourism. In what must have been a really unfortunate coincidence, as explained by Danny Rogers of PR Week, Sandy struck just as

Jimmy’s winning matches…. And sport psychology is playing a major role in how he’s doing it.

Jim McGuinness has been paid the ultimate compliment by being recognised by another sport, in another country, for another role as a result of the success he’s had with Donegal.  Celtic clearly took a lot of notice of the skill set the Glenties man has that catapulted Donegal to All Ireland success. In just two years Jim McGuiness transformed a team that, in 2010 prior to him taking the reigns, had gone out in the early qualifier rounds. I believe that Jim McGuinness’s qualification and experience with sport psychology had a massive amount to do with the success he brought

Fade Street Social – A Review!

This may well be a new departure for me! A blog that has nothing to do with sport or the business of sport and sponsorship or indeed with the Irish language…instead a blog about food and in particular a recent visit to a rather high profile restaurant! Will it be a once off foodie blog or will this be the first of many?   Sure we’ll give it a shot and see where it goes!   Fade Street Social…a review!   So it’s here. After much legal wrangling the doors of Dylan McGrath’s latest venture have finally opened and judging
