Musings on the Priceless Value of Time

Published on May 10, 2013 by in Business

We all want the very best and to achieve our full potential wherever possible. Sometimes we have moments of inspiration, other times we have hours and hours of simple hard work.  And throughout it all we know that the pursuit of excellence – and rewards that come with it – requires focused, uninterrupted time.  With time we can achieve the most amazing things. Great leaps forward in technology, medicine, engineering, retailing and thinking, rely on that vital ingredient – time.  Malcolm Gladwell estimated that it takes about 10,000 hours of practice from an early age to become a master of

The Business of Giving

It was encouraging to learn this week that despite the recession, we are still a nation of givers! Our client Ecclesiastical, a specialist charity insurer, yesterday supported the publication of a groundbreaking new report from not-for-profit advisors 2into3, which has benchmarked the scale of Ireland’s ‘third sector’ for the first time. At a launch breakfast event in Dublin’s IMI, the report author Sinead Kelleher said that income for the sector now accounts for almost €5 billion per annum, employing over 100,000 people. Perhaps more importantly, fundraised income has increased by 3.7%, a welcome indication that the economic downturn has not

Finding the Silver Lining in a Crisis

A wise woman once said, “In the midst of a crisis, when everyone about you is losing their cool yet you remain calm, then maybe, just maybe, you have no idea how bad it really is.”  Wise words and particularly relevant given the many crises we seen already in 2013. For a year that started well enough things went downhill rapidly. From HMV’s administration and closure in Ireland, to contaminated food ingredients, B&Q and Lance Armstrong’s performance on Oprah, 2013 has already thrown up more than its fair share of bad news. It shouldn’t be a major shock though –

Mercy Mercy Me…

Published on January 31, 2013 by in Business, Sport

There can’t be many people in Ireland that haven’t been affected to one degree or another by cancer and anything that raises awareness, including the recent announcement by Cork GAA chiefs, is to be warmly welcomed. However where to now for Cork GAA? By way of a quick recap, Cork GAA lost their sponsor of the last 15 or so years (O2) and have so far been unable to find a replacement with the league season only a matter of days away. The other evening, they announced on their Twitter account (@OfficialCorkGAA) that they had offered their senior football jersey

The day the music died…HMV in administration

The changing face of high street and how we consume digital content is front and central again this morning with the concerning news that HMV is in administration. This is naturally a worrying time for everyone who works there and for their suppliers. It’s also a sad day for an iconic brand that has been central to the music industry for many decades. From 78’s that spun on wind up gramophones to downloads , HMV has been there through it all. Hopefully a new way can be found to overcome the challenges and help future generations dance to the tune

Exporting Success…. I’ll drink to that

Today’s report from Bord Bia shows the value of our food and drink exports in 2012 surpassed €9 billion for the first time. This is a fantastic success story in the midst of a global recession especially when you take into account our chief trading partners – UK, the US and Europe. Beverage exports are up €37million on the previous year a 3% increase on 2011 and as a category it is worth €1.26bn a year.  In the alcohol drinks industry Irish whiskey has huge potential.  In the US the Irish whiskey category is growing at double digit rates annually

Infographic of the Day: The Facebook Effect

The fall in the value of Facebook stocks since it’s floatation has been well documented at this stage.  While the dramatic fall in share price has caught most of the attention plenty of other high profile tech companies have seen a fall in their value, albeit at various levels. The infographic in today’s Irish Independent clearly shows how Twitter, LinkedIn and Zynga have all seen a market value drop to various degrees. While a similar .com crash to what happened all those years ago isn’t going to happen this time around, it does show that the positive sentiment the markets showed to
