On the front page today…

Deaglán de Bréadún in the Irish Times reports this morning that Opposition parties are attacking the ‘scaled- down’ Governmental plan for a new prison at Thornton Hall. According to Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern, the project will now be constructed in three phases instead of all at once. Fine Gael’s Justice spokesman, Alan Shatter, has criticised the proposed plan as he believes that €42.4 million has already been spent with nothing to show for it. Similarly, Labour’s justice spokesman Pat Rabbitte has expressed his concerns as he believes this project is one of the most expensive and poorly planned projects in the history of the state.

In other news, it has emerged that Anglo Irish Bank will be taking control of Arnotts. Emmet Oliver in the Irish Independent reports that the banks will be looking to recover some of the €260 million they had lent out to the department stores and has reassured workers that there they have no plans  to cut any of the company’s 950 jobs. Although they are buying Arnotts, the two banks are not expected to run the store on a daily basis, but instead they will monitor the department stores activities and have a major influence over its future.

Finally, Priests are looking to create a union in order to express their views according to Catherine Shanahan in the Irish Examiner. The priests believe the union will help during this crucial time when relations between priests and bishops are increasingly constrained. This union will allow the priests to articulate their views along with taking on board both the civil and ecumenical rights of priests. They do not expect any opposition to this proposed union.
