Festival: Electric Picnic 2010

Stradbally Estate will rupture with entertainment this weekend with what can only be described as the best festival of the year. Joe.ie gives a nice run through of the top five attractions that are well worth a read for first time festival goers.

And ladies apparently the wedge wellies are all the rage this year.

So for those of you who are going well prepared will be no doubt part of the latest welly craze, as for the rest of you I’m sure your standard polka dot pink wellies will be just as glam.

Competition: Champion Sport Adidas Original Street Art Competition

We are all aware of the notorious hoarding outside the Bernard Shaw on Camden Street which showcases some pretty impressive street art but I came across this while on the way home from work last week and of course curiosity got the better of me and and I had to google it to find out more…….

To celebrate the launch of the Adidas Originals clothing and footwear in Champion Sports stores the competition is offering a lucky winner the opportunity to win a two-day masterclass with Krooked Type the Krooked Type collective featuring Maser, Albert Hooi and Fraher, and have your winning artwork displayed on your very own billboard.

Sport: – All Ireland GAA Finals

Sunday will see Kilkenny take on Tipperary in the All Ireland Senior Hurling final in Croke Park with throw in at 3.30pm. Kilkenny legend DJ Carey reckons “Tipperary and Kilkenny are very close to being equal and hopefully they provide great entertainment for the fans, but whoever wins will not care what kind of game it was.”

September 19thwill see the All Ireland Senior Football Final take place with Cork taking on Down in Croker at 3.30pm. Now I’m no expert on either team but you can join the discussion on the All Ireland football final over on the hoganstand forum.

Movie: The American

Alone among assassins, Jack (played by George Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde, is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate. Source: imdh.com

So far the reviews have been quite mixed and while this would definitely be my kind of movie if Clooney’s acting is anything like in Michael Clayton then I won’t be overly impressed.

Watch the Trailer and decide for yourself. .

Mr. Gilmor is director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. While the conference was primarily digitally focused, Mr. Gilmor’s presentation had definite relevance to the more traditional elements of the PR industry. He spoke of the need for a ‘new media literacy’ among people in society due the entire globe moving online and becoming more social.

The main issue he spoke about was the evolving definition of journalism. The traditional description of the occupation seems no longer relevant in today’s sharing social media culture. There is a grey area between what is deemed journalism and what is not. If someone is at a world-altering event, captures video on their mobile and posts it to a social networking site does that make them a journalist? Does tweeting that a train has broken down make you a transport correspondent? No one seems to be able to accurately draw the line anymore.

The blogosphere is congested with ‘news’. Daily updates occur on hundreds of thousands of blogs and we have to trawl through many of them to find valuable content. While trustworthy content is sometimes easy to note when it comes from a credible source such as an original offline media television channel or newspaper it is not sufficient to disregard all other sources. For example technology journalism is a branch of the industry that has moved almost fully online so how do we separate the good sources from the bad?

There are two steps in the development of a ‘new media literacy’ among individuals. Firstly there is an onus on active end users to be aware of four concepts to ensure the media they consume is credible. Firstly new consumers must be sceptical of the information they read, not to jump to conclusions or automatically believe everything they read. The development of a credibility scale in our minds is crucial i.e. do you look at the number of blog comments, tweets or source to decide the level of credibility attached to the content. Expansion of our critical thinking skills are attached to this also. And lastly understanding the consequences that anonymity creates e.g. on Wikipedia is important for end users.

So what should the creators of content be aware of? Put simply by Mr. Gilmor if all new age creators of content followed the original journalistic principles there would be less anxiety around the credibility of sources. This is step two. These principles include thoroughness of research, accuracy, fairness, transparency and independence. If creators of content were to follow these principles and end users were aware of them I too am confident that we would have fewer problems with useless noise and more comprehensive coverage across the board.

While I was hesitant to pay the €2.39 price tag I simply could not resist.

Sonic did not disappoint. The controls mimic the old-school Sega Mega Drive consol with the simple direction control and single ‘A’ button to make him jump. The graphics, music and Sega theme tune are all still intact. Remarkably all of the levels including the characters are similar if not the exact same as the original game. It did take me a while to get a hang of the controls and it is quite annoying that you get sent all the way back to the first level when you use up all of your lives but it is as addictive as it was in the 90s.

This game is not the first classic arcade game to make it on to the iPhone. Tetris, Pacman and Truckers all have app versions available in the iTunes store. Most of these come with a price tag often slightly heftier than €2.39 too. So what is it about childhood games such as Sonic that encourage us to pull out our credit cards? We all know the power of nostalgia but what price are we willing to put on it? I thought it was worth more than 2.39 but I could be wrong. Now if only they would bring Spryo The Dragon out for the iPhone….
