The Secret is there is no Secret, Guest Blog by Performance Coach Caroline Currid

Caroline Currid is recognised as one of the leading performance coaches in Irish sporting circles. Caroline has recently spent time in Kenya with their Olympic athletes observing their preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games and her blog below gives an insight into their mindset and reasons for success….. Westerners have pre-conceived ideas as to the reasons and wherefores of Kenyan running success. Here are some of them: Kenyans live and train at high altitude. Kenyans have a toughness born of early hardship and having been running from an early age, to and from school, tending to their flocks etc. There

Sports Pic of the Day:

Our sports pic of the day is not the usual in that it doesn’t contain any sports star or action from the pitch. Instead it’s a sad reminder of the darker side of sport, football in particular. Italian football is no stranger to allegations of match fixing and corresponding arrests and trails. (Calcio by John Foot is an excellent read on the subject). The arrival of a police car at the Italian team’s training centre in Covercianco was just part of a wider investigation into match fixing. This time it isn’t just limited to Italian football with authorities investigating betting rings

Video of the Day: The Watermark Project

We all hate the watermarks on file images, mainly because it stops us from using great images rather than paying for them. While needed they are unpopular but Getty Images have the taken a new approach to the watermark. The redesign of their watermark is like a rebrand of  Getty Images itself. The new watermark sits far better on photos and adds a layer of functionality as well. Simple and genius.

Sports Pic of the Day

Our sports pic of the day brings a smile to the face, just as wide as those of Brian O’Driscoll and six year old Michaela Morley. Members of the Leinster team visited Temple Street Children’s Hospital yesterday along with the Heineken Cup. This Leinster team is on the brink of a historic double and it great to see them take time to pay a visit to the kids at the hospital, which no doubt cheered them up!

Who Should Manage Social Media?

Traditionally PR agencies managed communications, direct marketing agencies did direct marketing, advertising agencies handled advertising and media buyers, well, they bought space and so on. Over the years, in order to survive and grow, many of these agencies became full service agencies with a certain amount of cross over between disciplines. As digital began to grow in importance, dedicated agencies sprung up to provide a digital service for brands. Then social media came along to complicate things and the question I often hear or read about is “Who should manage social media?” Is it in digital agencies? Is it PR?   Boutique

Top Five Sporting Grás!

Published on May 24, 2012 by in Social Media, Sport

There is something about a message board or indeed a good comment section that I love and thescore.ie rarely disappoints and it was the same last weekend. Following on from a post about the Champions League win byChelsea, some keyboard hero had a go at the soccer fans and with that it kicked off… GAA is full of brawlers, soccer is full of thugs, GAA is better, soccer is better, culchies versus scumbags…you get the picture! I love these ‘debates’! Neither side has any sense of perspective – it is their way or the high way and what makes these

May the farce be with you: When staff incentives go wrong

Published on May 11, 2012 by in Media

Companies are always trying to motivate their employees whether through  the allure of free beer or extra pay. One motivated Hooters employee got less than she bargained for. After being led blindfolded out to the car park where she expected to receive a new car for her hard work, she was instead presented with a toy Yoda. Next time you are offered an incentive from the boss, make sure you get it in writing…..

Pic of the Day: We’ve got a new home but now we need a name!

Pictured on the front page of today’s Irish Times are two of Dublin Zoo’s newest arrivals.   Dublin Zoo is delighted to introduce these two female Asian lion cubs to the newly developed Asian Forests habitat. This is the first time Dublin Zoo has been home to Asian lions and the new development marks the beginning of a very significant international breeding programme.   To celebrate their arrival, Dublin Zoo is inviting people to suggest names for the pair of female lions based on their Indian origin. Suggestions will be accepted through the Dublin Zoo Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dublinzoo), email info@dublinzoo.ie or

Farewell to an icon

As someone who has possibly had every hairstyle imaginable (The Rachel cut anyone?), I was saddened to hear of the passing of legendary hairdresser Vidal Sassoon in LA yesterday. Credited with revolutionising women’s hairdressing in the 1960s, Sassoon changed the way we looked at hairstyling shunning the teasing comb and rollers in favour of modern and minimalistic styles such as the sleek and shiny bob and the pixie crop; two looks which are as relevant today as when they were first created. A true pioneer of his profession his work will live on for many years to come.
