Tactics not Passion: Examining Cork 2-10 Mayo 0-11 – Division 1 Final

Published on April 30, 2012 by in Sport

A second half comeback saw Cork claim their third straight GAA Football League title. Guest blogger Emmet Ryan examines the factors that led to the Rebels completing the threepeat. Mayo press high, create chances The wind advantage in the first half saw Mayo adjust their approach from previous games. While still playing behind the ball, James Horan’s side pressed much higher in the opening 35 minutes. Defensively this hurt them as it prevented theball-carrier isolation tactics that had defined their resurgence in the latter stages of the league campaign. The move however made sense in the context of the first half

All set to change in this one sided rivalry – The Big Red Monkey Off the Back

As a United fan, tomorrow’s derby is by far and away the most important ever. Obvious statement perhaps? Whether we admit it or not, United fans do not respect City. Nor do we fear them. City is a club we kind of pity. A minor irritant. Leeds, Liverpool and Arsenal are the teams we love to hate. We envied Liverpool in the 1980s and are benchmarked by their success. Arsenal went toe to toe with us during our glorious spell and Leeds are well, Leeds. United look to Barca and Madrid and Milan and Turin for footballing benchmarks. City is

Heineken – Keeping it Legendary

What a week it was for Champion’s League action, but spare a thought for our friends across the pond. With the time difference, especially for those living on the West Coast, U.S. soccer fans don’t get to enjoy the footy the same way, or indeed at all, as we do. Heineken, official sponsors of the UEFA Champions League, have come up with the Fever Keeper which is a desktop app that will cover up all online information related to the Champions League games, from news sites to tweets and Facebook updates. The idea being you won’t accidently find out the

Seeds of Progress Sown in the Garden County?

Published on April 27, 2012 by in Sport

Tomorrow sees Wicklow take on Fermanagh in the Division 4 final in Croke Park, a fixture that will barely register on the radars of the GAA public and media. Probably not even beyond the hardcore GAA fans in the Garden County. I cannot claim to be the biggest GAA fan however I like to keep an eye on the results; I dare not say progress of, my home county – Wicklow. To reach the Division 4 final after decades in the wilderness of Division 4 football to me was a huge deal. I remember the excitement and euphoria around Mick O’Dwyer’s

Tactics not Passion: Previewing Cork vs Mayo – GAA Football League Final

Published on April 26, 2012 by in Sport

With the Division 1 GAA Football League  Final taking place this Sunday, guest blogger Emmet Ryan breaks down the tactical battles we can expect to see when Cork and Mayo clash in Croke Park. Mayo aren’t Down but… The fundamental approaches of Down and Mayo to defence aren’t all that different. Both look to build their games from behind the ball. Cork showed in the semi-final that they have a rather direct approach to dealing with hordes of bodies. They either try to go through them or go over them both. The route-one approach worked with great success for the Rebels

Infographic of the Day: If Social Media were a Superhero

This is definitely one of my favourite infographics, despite me not being much of a comic book fan. Although in the age old argument of who would win a fight between Batman V Superman I would be a firm believer in Superman. The inforgraphic, designed by the guys at Freestyle Interactive, assigns a comic book character to each social media platform based on active users, world reach and useability. Great way of giving each social media platform a personality.       Follow @Nigeltails

Pic of the Day – Dashing dogs!

Pictured in today’s Metro Herald are two dogs having a race at the Dachshund Race in Itzehow, Germany.   Dogs competing in the Dachshund and non Dachshund categories race for the coveted ‘Golden Sausage of Itzehoe’ during the traditional event. The prize must be nothing but impressive, going by the determined look in these dog’s eyes!

Time has come for GAA Sin Bin

New GAA President Liam O’Neill has come to power at just the right time.   While hurling seems to be entering a competitive era with the re emergence of Cork, Dublin looking capable of eating at the top table and Limerick and Clare organised and committed, this now means there are now seven teams looking forward to the summer time (Offaly, Wexford and Antrim are that little bit behind for now).   Football on the other hand seems to be struggling with issues surrounding the tackle, discipline, negative tactics and an over reliance of power over skill. There are too
